Talcum Powder Ovarian Cancer Lawsuits Update

2/24/2017

Comments

Lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson have stated that the company continued to market power that included talc, even after they had known the connection between ovarian cancer and genital talcum use. Many women have used their powder for decades did so under the guise of its safety for their feminine hygiene. The lawsuit goes on to accuse Johnson & Johnson Baby of failing to warn women of the increased risk of ovarian cancer, putting their own profits from sales ahead of the health of their customers. As a result, personal injury lawsuits by women with ovarian cancer who used baby powder with talc are rapidly increasing as the knowledge of the lawsuit spreads.
Johnson & Johnson Baby  Powder has been implicated in hundreds of cases of ovarian cancer in women.  Many women have used talcum powder for decades for feminine hygiene believing in the safety of the powder. Johnson & Johnson markets the product for “freshness” and “comfort”.  Many advertisements suggest that use of the powder in the vaginal area would mask odors and adsorb excess wetness.

Women were not told of a medical study in 1982 that found a 92% increase in ovarian cancer in women who reported genital talc use. There had been a prior study that suggested this connection back in 1971. Since the 1982 study by Dr. Daniel Cramer there have been 27 studies on the connection between Talcum power and ovarian cancer and most of them have confirmed the relationship.

Johnson & Johnson internal documents obtained in the lawsuits reveal the Company knew years ago that “Retrospective studies have implicated talc use in the vaginal area with the incidence of ovarian cancer”.

Is it safe to take medication once it has expired?

Many of us are guilty of keeping leftover painkillers from a surgery or old injury in the medicine cabinet instead of throwing them out, but is it safe to reach for them months or years later when a headache becomes too much to bear?

We recently got this question from a viewer:

Hi Dr. Manny,
What really happens to medications on after their expiration date? Is it unsafe to still take them?
Thanks

The expiration date on a medication is the date when the manufacturer will guarantee the full potency and safety of the drug. However, a study requested by the military and conducted by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), found that 90 percent of more than 100 drugs tested were safe to use up to 15 years after they had expired. The study included both over-the-counter and prescription drugs.

While the study seems to question the value of weight placed on expiration dates, it is important to remember what it signifies. While technically the medicines may still be potent, the effectiveness may not be the same. Additionally, taking expired medications can have fatal consequences.

Certain medications like nitroglycerin, insulin and liquid antibiotics are not as long-lasting as the ones that were tested in the study. A rule of thumb to live by is if you’re unsure about the safety of a medication and the expiration date has passed, throw it out or consult your local pharmacist before taking it.
